February Newsletter
V.P. International Events and Special Projects, Elaine Miller, sends the following message for February.
Although we are early into February, Happy New Year is still in order, especially since according to the Chinese calendar they are celebrating the Year of the Ox. We are in a time of new beginnings and it is my sincere wish that 2009 will see us come out of the gloom and doom we have been experiencing over the later part of last year.
There is a lot to look forward to in the coming days and months. We join with our interline friends in the United States to wish them well as they inaugurate their new President. May God bless him and guide him and may his country get behind him to help bring peace and stability as he works with other world leaders to restore confidence in what we can achieve together.
For WACA, 2009 will come with its own challenges, but with cooperation and dedication from both individual members as well as your Executive Committee we can see a brighter future. The enthusiasm of our clubs as they prepare and present interesting places and events for us to visit will help to expand our numbers and we encourage everyone to consider these events as we plan our holidays.
Of course, our next 2009 Interline Celebration and Annual General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will be a focal point this year and we are hoping for a well attended event. The pre- and post-packages beginning on 30 September to Langkawi and Borneo, are well planned and will present rare opportunities to share with other interliners new experiences and new places of interest. Make sure you check out the details in the WACA Web site under the Events Calendar and register early as deadlines have a habit of creeping up on us.
We especially want to draw attention to the events taking place early this year. Local club packages, in conjunction with our Regional Meetings, are upcoming and we hope to have great representation from around the globe.
Yes, it is winter in Canada, and what better way to enjoy it than by attending the Montreal Interline Club’s package to the Quebec Winter Carnival. This is the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Quebec City and part of the history of this our home and native land. I know this will be an unforgettable experience for all who will attend.
Close on its heels will be the Grey Whale Watching Weekend in San Diego. This is a special occurrence in nature and promises to be a fun filled weekend with many surprises.
As spring starts to bring the promise of warmer days, March will have the Airline Club of Thailand presenting its packages to Myanmar Tourist Sites, the Three Country Excursions and China Capitals Tours. These have always been interesting events and well organized by the members of ACT.
This April the Hungarian Interline Club have organized a WACA Spring Get Together in Vienna, Austria, a magical place with lots of history. The extra tour to Salzburg will bring memories of beautiful music, great wine and spectacular scenery. Spring in Austria is a special time and well worth the visit. Music, wine and friends, what more can we ask? Contact the organizers as soon as possible.
The Discover China 2009 Tour, organized by the Hong Kong Interline Club, is ready for May and is always an adventure and a window on new parts of China to explore.
Anyone who has attended the Dodo’s Nest package, presented by the Paille-en-Queue Social Club of Air Mauritius, will attest to the great time and painstaking effort put forward by the organizers. This year’s tour will be no exception. Much is planned for your entertainment in this beautiful part of the world.
On the other side of the world, the Jamaica Interline Club will again welcome participants to their beautiful island paradise and the Jamaica Jump Up. This annual event always draws interliners back again and again to sample their brand of music and island hospitality.
Later in June the Helsinki Interline Club will present its Sauna Party and a tour to Vilnius. Here we have an experience typical to this part of the world with hospitality and friendship and fun for all who attend.
Our Portugal Interline Club are also planning its Grand Festa in conjunction with their 31st Anniversary. This was a very successful package last year and will be just as much fun this year. If golf or tennis are your interest, make sure you check out the Passarola tournaments to round out the year’s Calendar of Events in November.
As you can see, there is much to look forward to in 2009. I encourage you all to check out the information for each event and I am sure there will be a package for you.
We are still looking for prizes for our Grand Venture Bonanza and hope that as we start this new year your club will be able to contribute something to help enhance the draws and create more interest for our members. It would be wonderful if each club could come up with a prize. I thank each of you who have been able to support us in the past and hope for your continued support for the future. WACA exists for you!
Once again, Happy New Year, and lets get behind our clubs and make 2009 a great year for the World Airlines Clubs Association.

Obituary
It is with much regret that I announce the passing of a long standing member of the Vancouver Interline Club: Al Harward advises WACA Member of Honour, Sheila Read. Al started his numerous travels to WACA events at the Miami Beauty Pageant in May 1980 and was known to many interliners throughout the world. Al and his wife Ann were a big part of the Vancouver Interline Club and he will be sorely missed.

Yours in interlining,

Keith Miller
